PATERSON, NJ – Paterson Eastside was able to break open a close game in the final minutes as the Ghosts defeated Hackensack, 50-41, in a Big North basketball game Wednesday evening in Paterson.
The game was tight throughout, as Paterson Eastside, led by Levi Holton, trailed 11-9 at the end of the first quarter. Holton had four points for the Ghosts, while Hackensack’s Neftali Valentin and Mike Saliba each hit three pointers to spur the Comets. John Judkins also had three points in the quarter, while Shawn Reckley rounded out the Hackensack scoring.
Eastside took a 20-19 halftime lead, as Holton scored five more in the second to lead the Ghosts offense. Khalil Baker was the offensive leader for the Comets in the second quarter, scoring six points.
The third quarter was more back and forth, as the teams ended the quarter tied at 33-33.
Eastside took the lead, 40-38, with a basket by Holton with 2:47 remaining. The Comets bounced back, with Reckley nailing a pair of free throws, to tie the game at 40-40, with 2:48 remaining.
But O’shamair Majette scored with 1:33 remaining in the game, giving the Ghosts a lead they would not lose, at 42-40. After Hackensack pushed the ball up the court and missed a jumper, the Ghost’s grabbed the rebound and were able to extend the lead to 44-40 on a driving basket by Holton.
The Ghosts were able to outscore the Comets, 6-1 in the final minute of the game to seal the victory.
Holton led all scorers with 20, while Bryce Stokes added 13 for Paterson Eastside. Reckley had 11 for Hackensack.
