Fifth Shooting in 5 Days Leaves Paterson Man Dead

PATERSON, NJ – A shooting in the area of 675 East 25th Street left a Paterson man dead and another injured on Tuesday.

The incident, announced by Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora, was the fifth shooting in Paterson in as many days, including two on Easter Sunday and one Saturday that left three victims injured. The arrest of Wayne A. Smith, 37, was announced in connection with the Friday afternoon shooting.

In the latest shooting, the statement said, members of the Paterson Police Department were called to the scene at approximately 8:06 on a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, the officers discovered Jessy Camilo, 26, and Tamir Blackwood, 27, with apparent gunshot wounds.

Both victims were transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center by Paterson Fire Department EMS. While Camilo is in stable condition Blackwood succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased.

Speaking to TAPinto Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh said he was filled with a mix of emotions including anger and sadness. “Our city is facing one of the greatest challenges we ever have,” he said, referring to the continued spread of COVID-19. “That unknown enemy has already claimed dozens of Patersonians.”

“To have some individuals, known enemies, continuing to use violence to perpetuate their criminality, tearing our city apart, is heartbreaking. Our Paterson police, and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, will not rest until the gunfire does.”
